Back to InsightsAIWhy I Build AI Software Instead of Buying It

Most businesses run on software that was built for someone else. You sign up, and then you spend months bending your process to fit the tool. The tool wins. Your business adapts.
I do it the other way around. I build the software to fit the business.
I am a solo founder, and I design, build, and run AI platforms for specific industries. An AI voice receptionist and back office for small businesses. An operating system for real estate agents. A film analyst for coaches. A practice system for law firms. Each one started with the same question: what does this business actually do every day, and what parts of that can software carry so the owner does not have to.
That question is why I build instead of buy. Off-the-shelf tools are designed for the average of ten thousand companies. Your business is not the average. The parts that make you different are usually the parts a generic tool handles worst, so you end up with workarounds, spreadsheets on the side, and steps that only exist because the software cannot do them.
Building custom is not always the answer. If a problem is truly generic, buy the tool and move on. Email, accounting, payments, those are solved. But the core of how you win customers and run your day is rarely generic, and that is where a system built to fit pays for itself.
Here is what building to fit looks like in practice. The software follows your process, not a vendor idea of it. The language it uses is your language. When something changes in the business, the software changes with it, because you own it. And the AI inside it is grounded in your actual work, not a demo.
I am not against tools. I am against forcing your business to serve the tool. If you are spending real time working around your software instead of with it, that is the signal. The goal is software that disappears into the work and just runs.
That is what I build. Systems that fit, and then get out of the way.About Jay Cosby
